Hammond Report July 29 2020 From Pandemic Quarantino Jon Hammond
Hammond Report July 29 2020 From Pandemic Quarantino Jon Hammond - Daily Music and Stories from organ player & accordionist Jon Hammond, today's story about Hungarian jazz guitarist legend Attila Zoller playing with me here in Frankfurt, Germany in the Jazz Kneipe. Attila escaped from Hungary 3 days before the Soviets blocked the borders in October of 1948 by carrying his guitar with just a few clothes stuffed in the case and walking over the mountains in to Austria. He was at my gig with his long-time friend Bill Lawrence. I knew Bill for many years from the Musikmesse, Bill's famous guitar pickups and some he developed with Attila, winding the coils on his sewing machine. Attila moved to New York City in 1959 and played with Chico Hamilton, many years with saxophonist Lee Konitz and he founded the Vermont Jazz Center in 1974. This gig was in March of 1994, shot on my Canon A1 Digital Hi8 camera, James Preston drums, Al Wittig tenor sax and yours truly at the Hammond XB-2 organ. Attila is playing Barry Finnerty's Yamaha guitar, Barry was on the band that night.
Stay safe out there folks, we're still in the pandemic quarantino, so mask up when in public! I'll be back tomorrow with another Hammond Report - Jon Hammond
